ACUPUNCTURE

HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE FUNCTION?

HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE FUNCTION?

The stimulation of the needles causes a release of bioactive substances produced by the body that have a curative effect on the nervous system (STRESS, INSOMNIA, ANXIETY), on the immune system (FREQUENT COLDS, SORE THROATS, INTESTINAL VIRUSES), on the muscles, the bones, the tendons and internal organs. The bioactive substances are anti-inflammatory, reduce pain and favor the regenerative process in the body.

FOR WHAT DISEASES IS ACUPUNCTURE INDICATED (BASED ON MEDICAL EVIDENCE)?

Thanks to approved scientific studies (CONTROLLED CLINICAL TRIALS/EVIDENCE BASED MEDICINE) and listed with WHO (WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION), acupuncture is recommended for the following diseases:
HEADACHES
MIGRAINES
PAIN WITH THE TRIGEMINAL NERVE
DENTAL PAIN (including mandibular pain, grinding of the teeth, and gingivitis)
PHARYNGITIS

ACUPUNCTURE FOR DENTAL DISEASE

Like already mentioned above, the WHO recommends, thanks to EVIDENCE BASED MEDICINE studies, acupuncture for therapy of the temporal mandibular. What do these medical words mean? TEMPORAL MANDIBULAR PAIN (OFTEN ALSO CALLED CRANIAL MANDIBULAR PAIN), are often due to a hyperactive musculature of the mouth. The principal cause is GRINDING OF THE TEETH AT NIGHT, caused principally from the result of daily stress at work, from anxiety of not being able to manage all of the commitments requested daily at work along with the frustration. The body tries during the night to relieve this stress and anxiety by grinding the teeth. WHAT HAPPENS AT NIGHT? The chewing muscles are under an ultra force that produces a series of dental damage, cervical pain, and a negative stimulus of the nervous system.

DAMAGE TO THE ENAMEL (distruction or loss of the tooth enamel)
GUM RECESSION that leaves open the root of the tooth that causes sensitivity with cold and hot drinks and increases the risk of caries.
DAMAGE TO THE BONE SURROUNDING THE ROOT OF THE TOOTH that leads to an elevated mobility of the teeth and can progress to tooth loss.
PAIN OPENING THE MOUTH
MYALGIA
CERVICAL PAIN
SHOULDER PAIN
FACE PAIN
INTERNAL EAR PAIN
PAIN BEHIND THE EYES
INSOMNIA
REPETATIVE NOCTURNAL AWAKENING
TRIGEMINAL MYALGIA
RINGING IN THE EARS/TINNITIS

GRINDING THE TEETH AT NIGHT?

Often I ask my patients: ”DO YOU GRIND YOUR TEETH AT NIGHT”? The answer is almost always the same: “I don’t believe so, I sleep”! But the reality is another thing. The majority of people today who grind their teeth do so because they have too much stress, anxiety, fear, preoccupations, and frustration. The grinding of teeth, also called BRUXISM, is evident immediately when I palpate the muscles that are tense, when I listen to the articulation of the mandible that cracks, when I observe the enamel that is destroyed and when I look at the gums that have receded. Which exams and which therapies are advised for BRUXISM - (GRINDING OF THE TEETH) - TEMPORAL MANDIBULAR PAIN?

EXAM FOR TEMPORAL MANDIBULAR PAIN

The exam for pain/dysfunction of the temporal-mandibular requires an analysis and palpitation of all of the muscles of the masticatory system and the muscles of the neck. This exam is called ELECTROMYOGRAPHY because it measures the “electrical” activity of a muscle when it is working. It is a method without pain or collateral effects, fast, and scientifically approved. It helps to unmask the muscles that are chronically tense and that work in a way non-physiological causing neck pain, migraines, and nerve pain (neurology).

POSTURAL EVALUATION

Another exam I recommend to my patients is the POSTURAL EVALUATION (EXAM OF THE POSTURE) computerized with A DIGITAL FOOTBOARD. THE ALTERATION OF THE POSTURE can also contribute to the arise of temporal-mandibular pain, neck (cervical) pain, shoulder pain, tingling of the hands, nerve pain of the trigeminal nerve which is not rarely the consequence of a work seated in front of a computer. To correct an ELEVATED POSTURE we will work together with you for an individualized therapy.

WHAT ARE MY THERAPIES FOR TEMPORAL MANDIBULAR PAIN?

As already mentioned, the therapy “EVIDENCE BASED MEDICINE” is ACUPUNCTURE. With this therapy you reduce stress and you can relax the contracted muscles (muscles of the mouth, the neck, the shoulder, etc.) responsible for diverse pain (headaches, migraines, pain and dizziness, etc.). TO AVOID GRINDING AT NIGHT AND TO PROTECT THE TEETH, I create two small dental appliances: one with a soft “cushion” for the night to reduce and neutralize the ultra-forces on the teeth and musculature (damage to teeth, headaches, insomnia, etc.), and another almost invisible one to wear at work during computer work. The appliance for work is a “stress-breaker” that reduces the stimuli of the nervous system and harmonizes the masticatory function (reducing muscle tension during work) in a phase of great stress.

HEALTH INSURANCE REFUND

ARE AGREED UPON WITH HEALTH INSURANCE and the exam of these therapies enters into the BASIC HEALTH INSURANCE (LA Mal) also if it is a dental exam.
